Modern Foreign Languages – French

Pupils in Key Stage Two enjoy a weekly French lesson lasting between 30 and 45 minutes. Our teachers are supported by a specialist, native French teacher called Louise, who uses high-quality resources to plan and teach engaging lessons. Learning in French exposes our pupils to a new language, enabling them to develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. We value the importance of understanding the wider world, and our curriculum fosters an awareness of cultural differences in other countries. Our aim is to ignite a passion for languages and provide pupils with a strong foundation for future language learning.

French is carefully sequenced so all units of learning build progressively, integrating new knowledge into larger concepts and advancing skills in four key areas of language learning: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

A variety of techniques are used to ensure children actively engage with learning French, including games, role-play, specific learning resources, and songs involving actions. A strong focus is placed on developing children’s pronunciation and accent.

Additionally, teaching French aligns with the Modern Foreign Languages provision in local secondary schools, helping to ensure a smooth transition and continuity in language learning for our pupils as they move through their educational journey.
